IT security for startups in environmental protection: why it is important

You create a better world, we create a safer world.

In a world where environmental protection and sustainability are becoming increasingly important, young start-ups dedicated to saving our planet play a central role. They are the ones who focus on innovation, creativity and determination and who really care about a greener future. But while they are dedicated to their mission - fighting climate change, reducing CO2 emissions, planting trees, removing plastic from the oceans and protecting species, in short, making the world a more sustainable place - there is one crucial factor that is often overlooked in all the earth-saving efforts: their own safety.

Imagine you have a breakthrough idea that could slow down climate change - your vision is clear and your passion is strong. You have a team of creative minds working enthusiastically on a new technology. But suddenly you find out that your data has been hacked, confidential information has fallen into the wrong hands or a cyber attack has paralyzed your entire infrastructure. Yes, unfortunately - not everyone finds environmental protection measures positive or is simply afraid of change in general.

But the motives for the act are not relevant in the first instance. The question is, what happens to you? Frustration, stress, fear, mistrust. All in all, an enormous setback for your work. But the worse consequence: trust is lost. A loss of trust can undo everything you have worked hard for and what environmental protection stands for.

A few examples:

Greenpeace was the target of a cyber attack in 2018, in which sensitive information and data about their activities and strategies were stolen. The attack led to significant security concerns and a broad discussion about the protection of environmental organizations. Within the organization, several members lost confidence in the organization and resigned.

In November 2021, Vestas, a leading manufacturer of wind turbines, was the victim of a cyberattack. The company reported that as a result of the incident, several IT systems in various business units and at several locations had to be shut down in order to bring the situation under control. Vestas worked closely with internal and external partners to fully resolve the issue and restore the systems. Although the production of the wind turbines was not directly affected, the incident resulted in customers, employees and other stakeholders being impacted by the IT system outages. This incident had not only technical but also confidence-building effects. Especially in an industry like wind energy, which focuses on sustainability and innovative solutions, such a security incident can significantly shake consumer confidence in the company and the technology as a whole.

Admittedly, these companies are no longer start-ups. But while large companies are often able to ride out the damage of a cyberattack or security breach with considerable reputational damage and, in the best-case scenario, recover after a few years, small companies are hit much harder. For them, the loss of trust and reputation can mean the final end. Statistically speaking, the loss of trust is one of the most common reasons for the insolvency of start-ups. Partners, investors and customers drop out and the young company suddenly finds itself alone. The original idea - that good idea that was pursued with so much enthusiasm - is then often forgotten.

The challenge

Young companies in the field of environmental protection face particular challenges. They struggle with limited resources and still want to make the biggest global impact as quickly as possible - to really make a difference. Their energy is focused on realizing their vision, not on IT infrastructure. IT is used as a means to an end, but not as a primary concern.

This focus makes them particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks, as they don't have the resources to implement expensive enterprise solutions or employ a large IT team to keep track of all threats. Without a solid IT security concept, these companies are not only putting their research at risk, but also their entire business idea. In the worst case scenario, the loss of trust in their work and in green technologies could jeopardize the dream of a more sustainable future.

The problem is not only caused by cyber attacks. The heavy reliance on digital systems and cloud services as well as increasing digital complexity also contribute to errors. Startups are increasingly storing their data in the cloud, communicating digitally and relying on technologies that are accessible via the internet. Each of these digital connections is a potential source of error, and even a single successful attack or digital mishap on your infrastructure could significantly disrupt your business activities.

But how can you protect yourself from the many dangers lurking in the digital world? How can you prevent your startup from being the target of an attack? The first step is to take measures to improve IT security and ensure that your data is protected at all times.

Conclusion: your vision needs protection

In today's digital world, startups and small businesses are exposed to enormous dangers. The threat of a cyberattack or data breach is real and can destabilize an entire company - both financially and in terms of trust. But there are steps you can take to protect your business from this.

Strong IT security is the key to realizing your vision for a more sustainable future without having to constantly worry about digital risks. Put a solid security strategy in place to ensure that your innovative work is not jeopardized by cyberattacks.
